A postal service carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Jasper was injured Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle near downtown Jasper.

According to a report from the Jasper Police Department, a vehicle struck U.S. Postal Service Carrier Elvis Knight as he started across the street near the intersection of Birmingham Avenue and Alabama Avenue.

“The accident occurred around 11:25 a.m. Tuesday morning,” JPD spokesperson Tammy Taylor said. “The driver of the vehicle reportedly told the officers who investigated the accident that he was looking back to see if there was any traffic coming down Alabama Avenue and didn’t see Knight in the intersection.”

Knight was transported to Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper where he had to undergo surgery for a full hip replacement.

One of Knight’s co-workers said he is doing good and is expected to make a full recovery following some rehabilitation.
