The Walker-Marion chapter of the American Red Cross will be hosting a luncheon for veterans on Friday.

The meal is the kickoff of a support group organized by the local Veterans Administration that will be meeting at the Red Cross beginning next month.

The luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.to 1 p.m. at the Red Cross office on Viking Drive.

Representatives from the VA will be on hand to provide information about the support group and other services available to veterans.

Executive Director Pam Fikes said Dr. Theron Gunn of the VA has been providing individual counseling in a part of the Red Cross office for several years, and the support group is an extension of that program.

“From the beginning, the main focus of the Red Cross has been to serve our veterans and military families. We have a strong relationship with the veteran community, and we are happy to be able to provide a spot for them to meet,” Fikes said.

The support group is expected to meet the first and third Friday of each month beginning in February.
