This year’s honoree is Kevin Callahan, general manager of Honda of Jasper, who co-chaired the group’s Forward Walker County campaign this year, along with Carol Alexander. He was presented with a plaque at the chamber’s annual luncheon earlier this year.
“I was happy and honored, but, at the same time, I don’t do what I do to get recognition,” Callahan said. “It’s about supporting the area, and I enjoy being involved. ... Whatever they’ve asked me to do, I’ve been happy to do, because they believe in Walker County and do a lot to support the area.”
Callahan said, although he enjoyed helping at the fishing tournament and with other programs sponsored by the chamber, his involvement in Forward Walker County was his favorite because it unified the county, city and chamber for a common goal.
“With the amount of money they raised, it showed how much of a commitment the business community has to continuing and the belief in the continued viability of the area,” Callahan said.
The Memphis native was attracted to Jasper four years ago by the business opportunities in the area and got involved with the Chamber the next year.
He said he spent a large portion of his career supporting from the sidelines, but wanted to be more hands-on with the projects he tackled here, and found the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County to be a good fit for that.
“So many chambers of commerce are just a welcome-wagon and this chamber has not taken that role,” Callahan said. “This chamber has taken a proactive role by trying to attract businesses, trying to promote the area and trying to look at the future economic viability of the area.”
