SARAGOSSA — Rescue crews responded to the scene of a fatal, single-vehicle accident on Hwy. 5 in Saragossa Monday afternoon.

According to Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe, Mabel Case Criddle, 71, of Bear Creek, died instantly when her truck left the roadway, overturned and struck several trees shortly after 2 p.m.

Criddle’s husband was transported to UAB by Regional Paramedical Services. His condition was unknown at press time.

Traffic on the road backed up and was stopped for some time following the accident as the Saragossa Fire Department stabilized the vehicle, removed the survivor and secured the scene.

Walker County Emergency Management Agency also responded to the scene to deal with spilled fuel from the vehicle. Alabama State Troopers are investigating the accident, as is procedure with vehicular fatalities.

No cause was available for the accident at press time.
