On the front page of Sunday, Oct. 27, edition of the Daily Mountain Eagle there was an article about Michael Franklin and his mission trips to the country of Honduras. He also made reference to our mission organization AHMEN (Ala-Honduras Medical Educational Network) and its work and purpose. While it is true that Mr. Franklin is an active member of AHMEN and has made many benevolent trips to Honduras, he does not speak for AHMEN or the majority of our members.

Mr. Franklin gave a mission statement in the article which is the one he operates on, but this is our official mission statement Alabama- Honduras Medical Educational Network is a faith based ministry that promotes the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the country of Honduras by sanctioning, mentoring, training, and giving organizational and logistical support for teams going to Honduras for purposes of evangelism, operating medical, dental, and eye clinics, starting and supporting adult schools, and construction and public works projects for the support and strengthening of the Christian church in Honduras, and any other activity that will aid in the spread of the gospel and give glory of God. Adopted by Board of Directors, Oct., 2007

Mr. Franklin stated in the article that “Any evangelizing takes a back seat to helping Los Laureles residents receive much needed medical care…” Although AHMEN represents people from many different churches and walks of life and now reaches into 26 states, our common goal from the beginning has been reaching people of Honduras with the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ (evangelizing). We use many different projects (medical, dental, eye care, soup kitchens, building projects, sewing schools, and others) to help the people see that we care about them, but it is still our ultimate goal to share the gospel with them and support the local church in their mission of spreading the good news. The most important thing in life is a person’s standing before a Holy God. All men have broken God’s law and are eternally separated from Him and to know that through faith in Jesus Christ we can be brought back into a relationship with Him that will last for eternity is greatest news that we can tell any person. Evangelizing can never be secondary in any Christian endeavor.

Mr. Franklin stated that “the promise of everlasting life is only to those who use this one (life) so that subsequent generations have a chance to escape starvation, etc”. Eternal, everlasting life is offered freely by God only to those who recognize their sinful condition and come to Him in repentance and faith in His son Jesus Christ. There is no work we can do on earth to earn eternal life. (John 3:16) Would that everyone reading this would come to Him in like faith.

Thank you for letting me set the record straight.

President of AHMEN
