My wife and my children had been visiting First Baptist Church in Walnut Creek, Calif. One Sunday, I visited the church with them. After the service, as we were leaving the church, I shook hands with the pastor and asked him if he would come over to our home for a visit.

He came over to our home the following week for our visit. We sat down in our living room, and after talking for a while my wife served us a glass of iced tea and we continued talking. We moved over to the dinner table and he sat across the table from my wife and I.

Finally, he asked me this question, it was a simple question, but I shall never forget the profound impact it had upon me at that time. My wife sitting with us at the table heard every word that was said. He looked me straight in the eye and asked me this question, “Truemon if you were to die at this very moment do you know for sure that you would go to heaven?”

It is a question you can only answer one of two ways, either yes or no. My answer was “no I don’t think I would.”

He then said, “If I could show you for sure, that you could know for sure that if you were to die at this very moment, that you would go to heaven, would you be willing to do it?”

Without any hesitation I said “yes” and my wife also said “yes,” and without any hesitation he opened up his Bible to the Book of Romans, and this is what he read to my wife and I. He called it the Roman Road.

He began reading at Romans 3:10 — As it is written there is no one righteous, not even one. Romans 3:23 — For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 5:12 — Therefore just as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. Romans 6:23 — For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 5:8 — But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 10: 9-10 — That if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord;” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved for it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10:13 — for “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

After reading these verses from the Bible, he asked me if I wanted to accept Jesus Christ as my own personal saviour, and I said “yes” and my wife also said “yes.”

So my wife and I bowed our heads and asked Jesus Christ to forgive us all our sins, and asked him to come into our hearts and lives and save us and be our Saviour, and since that day in November of 1966 my life and my wife’s life, were changed forever.

All the doubt and fear was removed from my heart, and I had peace in my heart, because I knew for sure that no matter when I die whether it is at this very moment or whenever it is — I am for sure going to heaven when I die, it doesn’t matter — if you accept Jesus as your own personal Saviour and Lord you too will go to Heaven when you die.

God said it in the Bible, in the Book of Romans, you can read it for yourself, I believe it, and God’s word is true, so that settles it forever and ever. It is God who is telling us this, and what he says he will do. Amen, and Amen!
