Rev. Garland Earl Clifton, 83, of Crane Hill, was received into Glory on Oct. 5, 2013. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Bell Sumiton Chapel with graveside committal services and burial in New Hope Cemetery on the Sipsey Cutoff Road. Bro. Joseph Whitley and Bro. David Roper will officiate. Visitation will be 6 until 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Bell Funeral Home in Sumiton.

Rev. Clifton was a long time resident of Sipsey where he raised his family alongside his loving wife, Ruby Lee Robinson Clifton. Garland and Ruby were happily married until her passing in 1981. Having only attended a formal school through the second grade, Garland taught himself to read from the Bible and thus his love for the Lord grew. He was a confident and dedicated Disciple of the Good News, always faithful to share his testimony and the love of Jesus Christ. He was licensed and ordained as an independent Minister of the Gospel, preaching any where the Lord saw fit to give him an audience with whom he could share the Word.

He was an employee of Pullman Standard for many years and made many lifelong friends there. He lived the 30 years after his retirement in the community of Crane Hill with his adoring wife, Patsy Jean Gilbert Jones Clifton. During their marriage, Garland and Pat spent much of their time traveling, spreading the Gospel, visiting with friends and family, and enjoying the company of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was loved by all of his extended family and always greeted them with a smile and a hug.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Ruby Lee Robinson Clifton; parents, Charles Alexander Clifton and Lela Bell Clifton; mother- and father-in-law, Roy and Clarissa Mae Robinson; daughters-in-law, Sandra Wallace Clifton and Joetta Lowe Clifton; son-in-law, Marion Wayne Church; stepson, Timothy Jones; and grandsons, Jeffery Phillip Whitley and Robert Wayne Clifton.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy “Mimi” Jones Clifton; loving daughters, Rita Whitley and her husband, Joseph, and Freda Church; sons, Robert Clifton and his wife, Beth, Phillip Clifton and his wife, Michelle, and Brad Clifton and his wife, Tracey; stepdaughter, Kay Roper and her husband, David; grandchildren, Sonia Waid and her husband, David, Jeremy Whitley and his wife, Shannon, Marian McLemore and her husband, Jason, Rachael Whitley, Phillip “P.J.” Clifton and his wife, Lisa, and Bradley Clifton; great-grandchildren, Michael “Mikey” Waid, Taylor Vance Whitley, Connor Vance Whitley, Matthew Brodie Waid, Aubrey Grace Whitley, Colton Lane Clifton, Sawyer Barnes and Channing Alexander Frazier.
