Parrish falls to No. 1 Pickens County, 70-6

PARRISH — The Parrish Tornadoes knew it was going to be a challenge Friday night against the No. 1-ranked Pickens County Tornadoes.

Parrish was shorthanded coming into the game — with five players out with injuries and several playing hurt.

Pickens County scored early and often in the 70-6 win. The first score came on the second play from scrimmage as Devonte Simon connected with Deonte Simon on a 32-yard touchdown pass, for a 7-0 lead with 11:25 in the first quarter.

After an interception, Pickens County scored again as Jemarcus Brown scampered 28 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was good giving the Tornadoes from Reform a 15-0 lead with 9:22 left in the first quarter.

Pickens County added another score with 4:53 remaining in the opening quarter on a 15-yard run, giving Pickens County a 21-0 lead.

Quarterback Devonte Simon connected with Jemarcus Brown on a 67-yard touchdown pass for the fourth score of the first quarter with 1:14 left for a 27-0 lead. The final score of the first quarter came on a 15-yard interception return by Marcus Hill. The 2-point conversion put Pickens County up 35-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The first score of the second quarter came as Jemarcus Brown ran 40-yards to pay dirt. Pickens converted the 2-point conversion, extending the lead to 43-0. Pickens County added another score with 7:25 remaining before the half as Devonte Simon connected with Jemarcus Smith on a 1-yard pass for a 50-0 lead.

Simon connected for his third TD pass of the game with 5:03 left before the half, on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Tarvarius Steele, giving the Tornadoes a 57-0 lead.

The high point for Parrish came with 3:04 left in the second quarter. Quarterback Reid Robertson connected on a 72-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Thomas as he got behind the defense and was wide open, making the score 57-6.

It didn’t take long for Pickens County to score as it returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a TD, giving the Tornados a 64-6 lead with 2:41 remaining before halftime.

The top-ranked Tornadoes rounded out the first half scoring on an 11-yard run by Hill, giving Pickens County a 70-6 halftime lead. After mostly back and forth action in the second half neither team scored. The final score was Pickens County getting the victory 70-6.

They were led in rushing by Spencer Piper who ran for 45 yards on 13 carries. Bryant Thomas led the team in receiving with 97 yards on four receptions and a TD. Robertson completed 9-21 passes for 132 yards and a TD.

The Tornadoes (1-5, 1-3) will travel to Brilliant next week in another region contest.
