DORA — The Dora Bulldogs rebounded from last week’s loss to top-ranked Calera with a 21-11 victory over the Corner Yellow Jackets on Friday night at Horace Roberts Field in Dora.

The Bulldogs held the overall edge in total yardage for the contest, outgaining the Yellow Jackets 337-267.

Dora’s Steven Gosha had a great night under center, connecting on 6-of-9 passes for 142 yards and all three of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns. Kenton Petties hauled in two passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Quadrekas Key caught three passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Twilley led all Dora rushers with 71 yards on eight rushes.

Hunter Doppler led the Corner offense with 23 rushes for 98 yards. Jake Averhart had a great night on defense for the Yellow Jackets, recording six tackles with three tackles for a loss.

Dora coach Johnny Wright praised his team’s effort in the second half of the game, while stating that mistakes made in the first half need to be improved.

“It was a sloppy game on our part, which is my responsibility. We were putting a lot of our players in new positions offensively and on defense, which was awkward for them,” Wright said. “We some big plays, especially on defense. Corner moved the ball a lot, but we were able to keep them out of the endzone. We did some good things on our passing game tonight — Gosha’s a young quarterback who made some sound decisions in the second half and found his receivers much better. Overall, we did enough to win the game and we’ll be working hard to improve before next Friday night.”

After an exchange of possessions to open the contest, Dora opened the scoring on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Gosha to Petties, giving the Bulldogs the 7-0 lead after the successful extra point kick.

Corner answered with a score of its own early in the second quarter, capping off a three-play, 40-yard drive, with Dylan Adamson connecting with Deshay Averhart from 37 yards out. Jackson Averhart scored on the two-point conversion to allow the Yellow Jackets to take command, 8-7.

Dora reestablished the lead on the following series with a five-play, 47-yard drive, with Gosha finding Key for a 25-yard touchdown strike. Gosha and Key connected again on the two-point conversion for the 15-8 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets scored their final points of the game on the first series on the half. After a seven-play drive, Ryan Stevens notched a field goal to draw Corner within four points, 15-11.

The Bulldogs added an addition score on the first play of the fourth quarter, as Key hauled in a 24-yard pass from Gosha for the touchdown. Following the missed extra point kick, Dora reached the 21-11 final.

The Bulldogs (2-1) travel to West Blocton (0-3) for a Region 4 matchup. The Yellow Jackets (1-2) also stay in region play, traveling to No. 1 Calera (3-0).
