They each wrote letters to the Daily Mountain Eagle protesting the decision by Cobb Theatres to not renew the lease on the building, which has operated as a movie theatre for 30 years.
Mattie embellished the back of her letter with an illustration of a fountain drink and a bag of popcorn. The popcorn served at Cobb, which Mattie described as “the best in the world,” also warranted a mention in Isabella’s letter.
In addition to the letters, the girls secured 60 signatures from family members and their fourth-grade classmates at Cordova Elementary School for a petition they titled, “How many people want the Cobb theater to stay in Jasper.”
Last week, Isabella and Mattie met briefly outside the shuttered doors of Cobb to reflect on the “hundreds” of movies they had seen there. They were joined by Isabella’s 7-year-old brother, Micah, who supported their effort.
None could recall seeing a movie anywhere else.
“This is the only theatre that we love,” Isabella said.
The following are the letters that Isabella and Mattie submitted to the Daily Mountain Eagle:
“Cordova Elementary kids have a problem with Cobb theatres 4 being moved. Because of this people who work their are going to lose their job’s and the kids at Cordova Elementary School has something to say about it and as myself Isabella Pilkington has something to say about it.
“I love their popcorn. I love the movies. Theirs nothing more I like than spending time with my family at the movies and without them I wouldn’t have been able to see “Oz the great and powerful, or Turbo, or Monsters University, or Dispicable me 2, or Madagascar 3.
“Just like other people in Jasper, I’m sure they have the same complaint. You can’t just give up on us like that and by us I mean the whole Jasper community and what this is gonna do is make Jasper people go all the way to Birmingham to watch a movie.
“I am 9 and not an adult so if you do this your turning down a kid and if you do that, that is just mean, cruel and horrible. Oh, yeah and I’ve seen the Avengers and it was good and I’m a girl who likes that, so pretty please with movies on top don’t shut it down.”
“I have went to the movie theater ever since I was little. I live in walker county. I would love if you keep it open please.
“Your popcorn is the best in the world. If you don’t keep it open I will cry. I will have to go to Birmingham just to see a movie in the movie theater.
“If you move it I will never ever go to the movie theaters again.
“Again pretty please with movies on top. Are you really going to make people travel just to see a movie. That is just horrible. And I am a kid not an adult. So you are going to turn down a kid.
“I am 9 years old. I go to C.E.S. Cordova Elementary School. I go to the movie theater every single year. Please Please Please keep it open. I love ya’ll. All my friends agree with me.”
