Lamar County hands No. 3 Oakman road loss

VERNON — Lamar County took a step in dethroning region champ Oakman with a 28-19 victory over  the Wildcats Friday night at Vernon.

Oakman, last year’s region champs, held a 19-14 halftime lead, but were outscored 14-0 in the second half as the Bulldogs handed Oakman its first region loss since 2011.

Lamar County put the game out of reach with a fourth-quarter touchdown that pushed the lead to nine points.

Senior quarterback Jase Trotter had a big game for the Wildcats despite the loss. He completed 10-of-20 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown.

He also rushed 10 times for 30 yards. Quinton Harris scored a pair of touchdowns for Oakman (1-1, 0-1) while Purvis Coger added another score.

Oakman will try to bounce back next week with a road game at Francis Marion. The Wildcats open with three straight road games before hosting R.C. Hatch in the home opener in Week 4. Francis Marion is 2-0 this season after knocking off R.C. Hatch 32-6 this week. Francis Marion finished 0-10 last year.

Chris Austin rushed seven times for  50 yards to lead Oakman’s ground attack.

Defensively, Jake Jones led the way with 11 tackles, both Brandon Davis and Hunter Williams had six tackles while Ashton Gay added four tackles.
