A 5-year-old Jasper girl was listed Saturday afternoon in critical but stable condition at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham after being viciously attacked by a dog around 7 p.m. Friday.

Jasper Police Chief Connie Cooner Rowe said in a text Saturday that the girl, who has not been identified, was playing with another child when the attack occurred at a home on Preston Avenue.

Rowe said a neighbor was able to free the child from the dog, which has been described as a pit bull, and call for help.

The child was flown by Air Evac helicopter to Children’s of Alabama around 8 p.m. and underwent surgery during the night for what officials said were serious injuries to her head.

Rowe said the dog has been quarantined, and its owner is cooperating with officials investigating the attack on the child.
