Maria Ross, owner of Athletic Arts Center, said auditions for the fifth annual production of “The Nutcracker” to be performed in December are now underway.

Auditions will be held at the Athletic Arts Center today and Friday for ages 5 and up starting at 4 p.m. each day. Ross said anyone interested in auditioning should call in advance to reserve a time slot. Prior dance training is not required because there will be different parts available for different age groups; however, some training for the more experienced parts could be helpful.

“They don’t have to have anything special prepared. There will be a 45-minute time slot to take a warm-up ballet class and learn choreography from a part of the show,” Ross said. “There will be something different for each group. It’s better if they have some training, but it’s not required.”

The cast for the winter production has increased throughout the years, growing from 22 members in its first year to approximately 50 in last year’s performance. Adults will have a role in the show as well, but they will be doing more of a “court-dance” type of choreography. Ross said professional dancers will be brought in to perform during the second half of the program.

“I’m excited because of the quality of dancers that we have that come out. Since this is our fifth year, I expect to have a high, technical quality coming from our dancers (who have performed in previous years),” Ross said. “We’ve been invited to several schools to perform throughout the month of December; we will continue to do that. Bevill State [Community College] has also been a huge supporter of us. It’s really amazing, the talent in this area.”
