This year’s benefit is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Community Health Systems Activities Center in downtown Jasper. If the proceeds exceed last year’s total, the Foundation will have broken the $200,000 fundraising mark in six years of existence.
Four women are set to receive support from the Foundation this year, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 13 since 2007. The first was Henderson, who passed away in August 2007 at the age of 30.
“This foundation is very dear to those of us who initially organized it and to those who have joined our cause along the way,” said Shannon Whitley, one of Henderson’s friends who created the Foundation in her memory. “There are wonderful people out there that are battling a terrible disease that touches every aspect of their life along the way. Each year we get to meet those people, hear about their uphill journey and feel like we are making a difference in their quality of life and peace of mind, even if in just a small way.”
The beneficiaries for 2013 are Gina Nichols, Marilyn Gober, Lynn Wooten and Ashley Larsen.
At 20, Larsen is the Foundation’s youngest recipient yet.
She was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma in March.
Larsen’s health insurance company has been hesitant to approve payment for treatments because of a one-year waiting period on preexisting conditions that does not end until January 2014.
There is a possibility that all expenses will have to be paid out-of-pocket.
Larsen said she was not aware of the Foundation until two people recommended her as a beneficiary.
“It was a great blessing because there are many nights where I’ve been wondering how I’m going to pay for this and pay for that. I’m so thankful for what they do,” Larsen said.
Tickets for the benefit are $25 and must be purchased in advance.
Ticket holders must be 21 years or older with ID to attend.
Black Rock Bistro will be catering a shrimp boil dinner for the event.
The night will also include a silent auction and entertainment by Professor & The Road Scholars, Road Trip Jones, Jeff Parnell, Adam Jefferson and others.
Take-out dinners will also be served for those who cannot attend.
