Estes died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Mareene Dean Payne Estes of Douglasville, Ga.; daughter, Julie Bowlick (Tim) of Douglasville, Ga.; son, James Richard Estes Jr. (Jackie) of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Meagan Bowlick, Gibson Bowlick, Clifton Estes and Lane Parker Estes; five sisters, Mary (Chuddy) Estes Miller, Dorthy Atkins, Maxine Gammon and Sarah Umphrey, all of Jasper, and Emma Lee Brown of Sipsey; and five brothers, J.W.(James William) Estes of Conyers, Ga., Buddy (Tommy Marvin) Estes of Arley, and Homer Estes, Jack Estes and Bobby Estes, all of Jasper.
A Jasper native, Estes was born on Feb. 2, 1930, the son of James Cranford Estes and Pearl Lane Estes. He was a Korean War veteran, a member of the First Baptist Church of Wedowee and had been employed with U.S. Steel.
Estes was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Adell Lay, and two brothers, George Estes and Benjamin Estes.
