Snead State’s Morgan Walton of Oakman has been awarded the NJCAA’s Exemplary Academic Achievement Award.

The award is given to student-athletes who have achieved a 3.60 to 3.79 GPA.

Walton, a Curry High School graduate, was a member of the Lady Parsons softball team. She majored in Science and finished at Snead State with a 3.78 GPA.

She is the daughter of Chris and Suzie Walton of Oakman. She will continue her academic and athletic career at the University of Alabama Huntsville to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and play softball for the UAH Chargers.

“We are very pleased our student-athletes receive this honor because it reflects on their commitment to academics as much as their focus on athletics,” said Snead State Athletic Director Mark Richard. “This group of student-athletes has set the academic standard high, but with the direction we’ve taken with the athletic program, the athletes who follow them will find success as well.”

For the second year in a row, much of the attention in the Snead State athletic department shifted to mirror the college’s mission to enhance opportunities for students through the College Completion Agenda.

The changes set Snead State Athletics apart from the other programs in the state.

“At a time when many community colleges eliminated athletic programs, we continued to offer them for one reason – our students,” said Richard. “Many of our students rely on the resources available through athletics to set them on a path toward a quality education. Our commitment was and will continue to be helping students succeed.”

All seven of Snead State’s NJCAA Academic Student-Athletes graduated with their Associate’s degree in May.

Three Snead State teams were named NJCAA All-Academic Teams.

The tennis team finished with a collective 3.44 GPA. The softball team completed the year with a 3.32 GPA, and the volleyball team ended with a 3.0 GPA.

To qualify as an NJCAA All-Academic Team, the team must have an overall team GPA of at least 3.0.
