DME wins state’s best ad award

The Daily Mountain Eagle received several advertising and editorial awards at the Alabama Press Association’s summer convention this past weekend, including the state’s prestigious Ad of the Year award.

“It is especially gratifying to know that the hard work of the Daily Mountain Eagle team here in Jasper has been acknowledge by its peers in the newspaper industry,” says Publisher Jack McNeely, who accepted the awards during the APA Better Newspaper Contest banquet Saturday at the Hilton Golf & Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

Seventy newspapers submitted 2,668 entries in the annual contest. Kentucky Press Association members judged the entries.

The Daily Mountain Eagle competed in Division B, or daily newspapers with a paid circulation of less than 20,000.

The newspaper received five advertising awards, including the Ad of the Year – a full-page black-and-white Carl Cannon ad that published Memorial Day 2012.

The ad features an American soldier kneeling at a cross, silhouetted by a setting sun. The ad reads, “Memorial Day is the perfect time to pay your respects to the soldiers who fought and died for you and your country. They may not have known us, but they fought for us. They fought for our freedom. They fought for our rights. HONOR. RESPECT. THANKS.”

The judges wrote, “This simple ad conveys the seriousness of Memorial Day and reminds the reader to remember those who gave their lives in military duty. The car dealer did a good job keeping his name subliminal, letting the strong image and appropriate headline font tell the story. This ad proves one of the most important rules of good graphic design – less is more!”

The ad designed by Executive Advertising Director Jerry Geddings also captured a first-place award for Best Large Ad – Black & White in Division B.

Additional advertising awards include:

• 2nd Place for Best Original/Creative Idea for promotional ad that states, “This Space For Rent or Lease.”

• 2nd Place for Best Use of Humor for an ad for The Rest of Your Life Sleep Evaluation Center.

• 3rd Place for Best Classified Page or Section.

Meanwhile, the editorial department received four awards, including:

• 2nd Place for Best Editorial Page or Section. The judges wrote, “Great job of tackling major issues facing state.”

• 2nd Place for Best Humorous Column for “Whiffle balls not meant for fingers,” written by James Phillips. The judges wrote, “Great column, to which all parents can relate!”

• 3rd Place for Best Editorial Column or Commentary for “Home instruction should remain in zoning ordinance” by James Phillips. The judges wrote, “Strong argument, and plenty of information.”

• 3rd Place for Best Local News Coverage.

The Opelika-Auburn News captured First Place in General Excellence in Division B.

The Daily Mountain Eagle also recently received awards in the 2013 Alabama Associated Press Managing Editors Newspaper Contest. The Eagle competed in Division 3, which is papers with a circulation fewer than 15,000.

Editor James Phillips received three awards in the contest, including 1st Place in Education Reporting for “Technology to take classrooms to next level.” Phillips also earned 3rd Place in newswriting for “Police search remote area for missing man” and 3rd Place in Humorous Moments Photo for “Time to cool off a little.”

Sports Editor Johnathan Bentley received a 2nd Place award in Sports Deadline Reporting for “High School Football and Volleyball Coverage.”
