Producer/director Mike Putman of Jasper said nominees should epitomize the strength and character of the Southern woman, forging ahead through difficulties as a trailblazer in her field, whether she is part of the business world or a stay-at-home mother.
The contest is open to women from Jefferson, Walker and Blount counties. The deadline is Thursday, Aug. 1.
Entries are being accepted through Facebook by sending a private message to Corner Theatre Academy or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Ten women will be chosen by a panel of judges to be honored at the opening of CTA’s performance of “Steel Magnolias” on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The play was written by Robert Harling after the death of his youngest sister and was originally staged off-Broadway in 1987.
The popular film starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts was released in 1989.
A remake with an all-African American cast appeared on Lifetime in 2012.
“It’s a crowd-pleaser,” Putman said of the show.
Besides “Steel Magnolias,” the 2012-2013 season of CTA also includes “Beauty and the Beast,” “Gruesome Playground Injuries,” “The Odd Couple,” “Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical,” “Seussical Jr. The Musical” and “Children of Eden.”
