The Walker County Sheriff’s Office arrested three people and recovered a variety of stolen items from a junkyard location in Townley on Thursday.

While deputies from the sheriff’s office were executing a search warrant on the location on Copperhead Road, they recovered six stolen vehicles, five vehicles with altered, removed or obliterated Vehicle Identification Numbers, a stolen handgun, stolen road signs and fraudulent documents related to motor vehicles.

The search also recovered 4.2 ounces of white powder and a rock-like substance that has been sent to the Alabama Forensic Lab for identification.

Larry Dale Gant, 39, and Ginger Michelle Atkins, 42, were arrested at the location and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

The junkyard was operated by Terry Gene Whitt, 60, who remains at large.

According to Walker County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ralph Williams, Whitt arrived at the residence during the search but fled on a motorcycle before he could be arrested. Williams also said that Whitt had active warrants for his arrest and would face additional charges from the items and activity discovered during the search.

“Mr. Whitt has been running this compound for years with impunity and we would consider this a successful operation,” Williams said. “The Sheriff's Office SWAT team was utilized to execute the search warrant and secure the area while the search was conducted.”
