If received, the funding will be used to build a fishing dock at Disney Lake.
“We’re going to go after a $40,000 grant. We’ll ask Land and Water Conservation for $17,500 and we’ll do the rest of the funding with city forces and the in-kind match,” Ostaseski said.
Ostaseski said the goal is to replace the current wooden pier with a 40-60 foot aluminum dock and railing.
Ostaseski also assured council members that the city would not have a financial obligation other than providing labor.
In other recovery-related news, Ostaseski said requests for qualifications will be ready next week for design firms interested in assisting the city with upcoming rebuilding projects.
City officials will be seeking funding from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs for a police/fire station, City Hall, infrastructure improvements for affordable downtown housing and a public works storage facility.
The design-build process is expected to be quicker than bidding out a project piece by piece. Ostaseski said it would also allow for verified cost estimates.
“The last thing we want to do is go after some of those costs on those projects we’re considering and not get funded. I want to be able to make the case to ADECA that what we’re asking for is precisely what we need,” Ostaseski said.
The selection process will be qualification based rather than price based, and Ostaseski said one firm will be selected for each project.
In other action, the council
•accepted bids on five trailers and one snorkel truck from the fire department that were previously declared to be surplus property.
The trailers were located at the old VFW for several months and were used to house disaster recovery volunteers working in the city.
The bid for the snorkel truck was rejected. The other bids totaled more than $13,000.
•discussed the proper procedure for reporting violations of the city’s nuisance ordinances.
Council member Ed Earp said there have been complaints made at City Hall recently about residents allowing their grass to grow too tall and placing freezers on the edge of their property to be used as garbage cans.
Complaints are to be made at the police department. Residents will be then be sent a letter from City Hall informing them that they have 30 days to comply with the nuisance ordinance.
