Hull Road remained closed for several hours on Sunday while the fire department kept an eye on the smoldering remains of the building.
Larry Cummings, who owned the restaurant, said the business closed at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
The first call to Sumiton Fire and Rescue was logged at 3:50 a.m. on Sunday. Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after that and called for assistance from Dora Fire. The firefighters connected to a nearby fire hydrant and pumped water from two engines in an attempt to suppress the flames.
The building was an older structure and had survived through at least two additions, resulting in overlapping roofs that worked to feed the fire while keeping the firefighters from extinguishing the flames.
Employees of the restaurant began arriving for work, only to find their workplace in flames.
Several members of the staff appeared distraught and emotional while watching the building continue to burn. As daylight broke, regular breakfast customers also began to arrive.
At press time the cause of the fire was not known and remains under investigation.
