As we approach the 40th annual National Volunteer Week, April 21-27, I would like to take this opportunity to honor our volunteers who tirelessly share their time and talent with our community.

National Volunteer Week, which is sponsored by Points of Light Institute, was designated by executive order by President Richard Nixon in 1974. This week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in their community. It’s about meeting our challenges not as isolated individuals, but as members of a community, with all of us working together.

This year’s theme “Celebrate Service,” captures the meaning of this signature week: honoring the people who dedicate themselves to taking action and serving in their communities.

l would like to thank all of our volunteers for doing just that, making a difference by serving the Walker Area Community Foundation and the Bankhead House and Heritage Center. Without their dedication the work of YOUR Community Foundation Would not be possible!

As we approach the two year anniversary of the storms that devastated our community, I would also like to extend our endless appreciation to all of the faith-based volunteers who continue to work and rebuild homes and lives during the ongoing recovery of our community!
