Next up for the Vikings is the State Tennis Tournament set for Monday and Tuesday at Decatur’s Almon Tennis Center, which is located in Point Mallard State Park.
On Tuesday, Walker took home first place while Chilton County placed second. The top two teams from each of the state’s six section tournaments advance to Decatur.
Central-Tuscaloosa, Demopolis, McAdory, Paul Bryant, Pleasant Grove and Ramsay also played in the one-day tournament.
For Walker, No. 1 Kallie Beall, No. 2 Amanda Bertoldi, No. 3 Jeana Burton, No. 4 Gabby Jordan, No. 5 Lexi Dillard and No. 6 Sarah Warren each won singles titles. Walker’s three doubles teams also were perfect on the day with the No. 1 team of Beall and Warren, the No. 2 team of Bertoldi and Jordan and the No. 3 team of Burton and Dillard each picking up section titles.
“I think we are playing our best tennis right now, which is what you want going into state,” Walker tennis coach D.J. Emerson said. “This is a very close group. They are very supporting of each other.”
Walker is coming off a third-place finish at state last year. The Vikings finished behind state champ St. Paul’s and runner up Cullman.
“It’s been our goal to get back and get the blue map (state championship trophy). We set high goals as the beginning of the year. I told the girls that today was the stepping stone for where we want to be,” Emerson said.
St. Paul’s has owned the girls state tournament over the last nine years, winning eight championships over that span.
