A midday shooting sent one person to the hospital and left Jasper police looking for another.

According to Jasper Police Captain Larry Cantrell, a customer at R.J.’s services station on Highway 69 South was shot by another customer around noon on Thursday.

Cantrell said the shooter pulled up, got out of the car and shot the other customer. Although multiple shots were fired, the victim was only struck once, under the arm.

Cantrell said the victim, who he declined to name, was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition. He said the bullet missed his heart, lungs and other vital organs, but was lodged near his spine, requiring additional care.

The incident was captured on the store’s video surveillance system, and Cantrell said there was an excellent quality video of the shooting. The police department is already looking at a suspect in the shooting, although charges have not yet been filed. The suspect’s name was not released, nor was a motive for the shooting evident at press time.

“We’re just trying to put it all together now,” Cantrell said.
