City Clerk Kathy Chambless told the council the changes in the budget she was presenting had aleady been approved. She was asking for final approval from the group before adjusting the city’s General Fund.
“Even though they are approved, I like to give you a list and present them before I actually amend the budgets,” she said.
General Fund ammendments included an elevator repair at Swann Gym, a lawsuit settlement and additional salary related to that settlement, funds for the street department to help with storm debris cleanup, retirement and payroll tax and a donation to the Walker County Child Advocacy Center. The total of the amendments added up to $57,708.
“I will reduce the fund balance now,” she said. “There could be a revenue source later that would allow us to amend again to put the funds back.”
The retirement and payroll tax change was $40, which impressed District 3 council member Gary Cowen. “When you have budget amendments that come to $40, that’s pretty close,” Cowen said. “I’m surprised that we don’t have cents on here.”
Chambless responded, “That’s the accountant in me.”
