“I don’t mind making a fool of myself for a good cause, and this is a great one,” Sumiton Mayor Petey Ellis said. “There are so many people we all know who have had to deal with cancer. My mother, my aunt and my pastor’s wife have all fought it. This was my way of trying to help out a little bit.”
Ellis won the People’s Choice Award by raising the most money from the audience. He and Sumiton Police Officer Kris Price garnered laughs from the audience for their performance as Honey Boo Boo and Mama June from the reality show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”
Cordova Police Chief Nick Smith, who walked away with the night’s top honor, echoed Ellis’ statement, “When I was asked to do it, I didn’t hesitate. It’s always good to be able to make people laugh, especially for a good cause.”
Cordova Police Officers B. J. Simmons and Aaron Mosley, as well as Assistant Police Chief Zac Green joined Smith in the pageant. Business owners also got involved, Dora Fire Chief Chris Edwards represented Edwards Insurance Agency, chiropractor Eric Hogland strutted his stuff for Back in Line Chiropractic and Carl Frost, owner of Icemakers, LLC, got dolled up for the event. Mike Crauswell joined Bevill State students Jordan Arguello, Josh Darrow and Brenden Pruitt to round out the lineup.
The organizers of the event thanked the BSCC Cosmetology Department for helping the contestants get ready, the committee members who planned and organized the event, Eunice Russell of Ken Glover Drugs, as well as the guys who participated.
In addition to having fun and raising money for a cause they believe in, the winners walked away with something else — a new respect for what the women in their lives endure for the sake of beauty.
“My feet are killing me,” Ellis said as he headed home at the end of the night.
“I definitely have a greater appreciation for what women go through to get ready,” Nick Smith laughed. “And it isn’t easy to get the makeup and nails off either.”
