Carbon Hill boys notch 20th win

Carbon Hill closed out the regular season on a high note, pulling away for a 56-42 win at Sulligent on Monday.

Carbon Hill picked up its 20th win of the season.

Sulligent kept the game close through three quarters. The Blue Devils trailed just 36-32 going into the final quarter, but Carbon Hill went on a 20-10 run to earn the victory.

Garrett Kirkland had 17 points to pace Carbon Hill while Daniel Woodard added 12 and Gerald Smith put in 11. Stevie Simerly added six points, Jon Bray put in five, Chandler Gann had four and Ryan Simerly scored a point.

Carbon Hill led 18-10 after the first quarter and 29-23 at the half.

"I don't think we are playing our very best, but all that matters is that you play a little better than the other team," Carbon Hill coach Robert Epps said.

The Bulldogs take on Corner at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Dora High School in the Area 8 Tournament.

VARSITY GIRLS

Sulligent 69, Carbon Hill 44

Sulligent snapped Carbon Hill’s 13-game winning streak with a 69-44 home victory on Monday.

Sulligent used a dominant second half to earn the win. The Blue Devils outscored Carbon Hill 34-20 in the second half.

“We would have been better off practicing today,” Carbon Hill coach Wade Tittle said. “The real season begins Thursday. We have to clear our minds and go back to work.”

Carbon Hill (23-6) trailed 18-15 after the opening quarter and 35-24 at the half. Caroline Dodd had 20 points to pace the Bulldogs. Carbon Hill hosts Oak Grove at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the opener of the Class 4A, Area 8 Tournament.

Class 1A, Area 13 Tournament

Sumiton Christian 40, Parrish 33

Sumiton Christian’s girls live to play another day.

The Eagles outscored Parrish 12-5 in the fourth quarter to break a tie and knock off the Tornadoes 40-33 in their Class 1A, Area 13 first-round game at Lynn High School on Monday.

Sumiton Christian advances to take on No. 4 Lynn at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Parrish held a slim 13-10 after the opening quarter. The Eagles went on an 8-2 run in the second quarter for a 18-15 halftime lead. Parrish battled back to notch the score at 28-28 after three quarters.

Kendell Hamm had 16 points to lead Sumiton Christian (12-12). Collin Bowen added nine points and 11 rebounds, Kirsten Click had seven points and 10 rebounds. Kendall Beth Sides added four points, Katlyn Sides put in three and Anna Fitzgerald had one point.

For Parrish, Mary Jo Sanford and Mekya Hill each had 10 points and Savanna Jones added five.

Lynn (25-1) is 2-0 against Sumiton Christian this season. In the other semifinal game Thursday, Marion County plays Brilliant at 5 p.m.
