The Jasper Rotary Trivia Night will be Feb. 22 at the Community Health Systems Activities Center in downtown Jasper. Doors will open at 6 p.m.; questions begin at 7.
“The first two years have been very successful for our club,” said Kevin Callahan, general manager of Honda of Jasper and organizer of the trivia contest. The contest saw 18 teams in its first year and 24 teams last year. Callahan said this year’s goal is 30 teams and he expects the event to raise $5,000 to $7,000 for the Rotary Club, which will use the funds for various grants that it gives throughout the year.
The trivia night competition will feature teams of eight at a table. Individual tickets are $20 or an entire table can be purchased for $150.
“That’s less than $20 per head for a full night of entertainment,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of fun the first two years. The room has been full of laughter.”
The event will feature 10 rounds of 10 questions. A captain must be selected for each team, and that person will record the team’s answers and bring them to the scorer’s table. Teams may also purchase five mulligans for $20. The team with the most correct answers at the end of the night will be declared the winner and will receive the “Big Brain Trivia Trophy.”
“No one should be worried about being embarrassed,” Callahan said. “No one will be reciting answers out loud. All answers are recorded on paper by team members. Only your team will know your answers.”
Teams are encouraged to come up with a theme and decorate their tables.
“People can even wear costumes,” Callahan said. “We will announce first and second place table winners during our ‘halftime’ break.”
Callahan said teams are also encouraged to bring their own snacks or dinner as well as their choice of beverages.
“Whatever they wish to do to make the evening more fun for their team,” Callhan added.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit local nonprofit organizations. In the past, Rotary has benefited groups such as: United Way of Central Alabama, Hope Clinic, Crescent Junior Study Club (supporting foster children), Boy Scouts of America-Black Warrior Council, the Arc of Walker County, the Pregnancy Testing and Resource Center, the Walker County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Club, KidOne Transport, the Salvation Army, the Walker County Homeless Coalition and others.
