Curry earns sweep of Meek

ARLEY — Curry built a big lead and held off a second-half surge by Meek for a 66-60 victory at Arley on Monday.

Coming off a fifth-place finish at the Walker County Basketball Tournament last week, Curry wasted no time taking a comfortable lead over the Tigers.

Curry got baskets from Alex Odom, Jaxon Aaron and Spencer Fikes during a 6-0 run to close the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets led 17-8 at the end of the first and pushed their lead to as many as 14 points in the second quarter after a 3-pointer from Odom made the score 33-19 with eight seconds left in the half.

Meek’s Jentson Hiller drove the lane for a score at the halftime buzzer to cut the Jackets’ lead to 33-21.

Behind the play of Hiller, Seth Hayes, Jeremiah Banks and Andrew Johnson, Meek put together a run in the second half. The Tigers scored 18 points in the third quarter and held Curry to 12 to make the score 43-39 going into the final quarter.

Meek took advantage of four technical fouls on Curry in the second half, but the Tigers weren’t able to make up the double-digit deficit.

Curry sealed the game at the free throw line. The Jackets were 14 of 22 from the charity stripe in the game while Meek was 16 of 32 at the line.

Owens paced Curry with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, along with four assists and four rebounds. Odom also knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Aaron added 14 points and four rebounds,Wesley Key had eight points and 11 rebounds and Fikes put in six.

For Meek, Hayes led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds, Johnson added 14 points and eight rebounds, Hiller had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Banks had 13 points and five rebounds.

VARSITY GIRLS

Curry 46, Meek 32

Curry broke open a close game with a big second half en route to a 46-32 victory over the Meek girls on Monday night. The Tigers held a 16-15 lead at the half, but Curry held Meek to just four points in the third quarter to take a 26-19 lead. The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Ashlee Swindle led a balanced Curry attack with 11 points, Kaylee Horton put in eight, Mary Beth Scott and Emily Aaron each had six points, Logan Black added five and Taylor Black put in four.

Curry made 18 of 30 free throws in the game.

For Meek, Morgan Hudson had a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. No other players on Meek had more than three points.
