The Walker County branch of the NAACP is hosting its traditional Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities on Monday.

The King Day March for Non-Violence will begin at noon at A.P. Howell Park. The route will proceed down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to 19th Street and Birmingham Avenue and conclude at the Percy L. Goode (Frisco Gym) Community Center.

A program will follow at 1 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. Donald Bobbitt of New Hope Baptist Church in Carbon Hill.

Jasper City Councilwoman Sandi Sudduth, one of the organizers of Monday’s events, said ceremonies celebrating the life of Dr. King are generally well-attended.

“The crowd has been anywhere from 150 to 200 people. Once you get in the gym, it’s usually packed,” Sudduth said.

However, Sudduth added that organizers would like to see more participation from local youth and other community members.
