The new year had a somber start Tuesday night when a plane crash claimed the lives of three Jasper-area teenagers.

The three young men who died in the incident were Jordan Ryan Smith, 17, of Jasper, Brandon Tyler Ary, 19, of Arley, and Jordan Seth Montgomery, 17, of Arley.

While the Daily Mountain Eagle’s newsroom staff has worked hard this week to report the facts concerning the crash, the newspaper has not had an opportunity to express its condolences to the families of the three young men who lost their lives in the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.

There are many questions surrounding the series of events that led to the Piper PA-30 crashing into a swampy, wooded area about a mile south of the Walker County Airport-Bevill Field. The Eagle is hopeful the investigation into the incident will clear up those questions soon.

There is no question that three lives have ended too soon. There is no question that three families are mourning the losses of their teenage sons. There is no question that many more members of our community are also experiencing grief due to this tragic accident.

While we are a newspaper who prides ourselves on keeping the community up-to-date on news happening in our area, The Eagle is also a newspaper that prides itself as being a part of the community.

When the community hurts, we hurt. The thoughts and prayers of our entire staff is with those who are hurting. May God grant us all comfort and peace beyond any of our understanding.
