The council voted unanimously to appoint Bray to the open seat after mayor James “Pee-Wee” Richardson notified council members that a vote at the previous meeting to place Bray into the position was declared null and void by state statutes, due to the number of voting council members not being present for the act to pass correctly.
Bray’s oath of office was administered by City Clerk Kim Sides.
In other action, the council:
• Voted unanimously to allow city employees to have Monday, Dec. 31 and Tuesday, Jan. 1 off from work in observance of the New Year’s holidays.
• Approved Madison Heating and Air to install a new central unit at the community center at a cost of $1,000.
• Voted unanimously to authorize Richardson to make purchases of $500 or less for the city’s needs.
• Released Matt LeDuke of the Lowe, Mobley, Lowe and LeDuke Law firm of Hamilton as the city’s attorney. A subsequent motion to appoint Charles Stevens Jr. of Jasper as the new city attorney passed unanimously.
