“The Lord has truly blessed me, because I never would have figured I could make a living at what I do,” Triggs said. “The economy is bad, but I take every day by faith and pray every week that someone will come into the shop and find something they like and will buy it.”
Triggs first opened her business as a consignment shop, but after three years in the consignment business she decided to start selling nothing but new items of clothing.
“Growing up I spent most of my time in the ministry traveling with my family, so I had a lot of nice dresses that I wanted to sell, but I didn’t want to sell them in a yard sale, so I decided to open my own consignment shop,” Triggs said.
“I think we were one of the first consignment shops in Jasper. Now we sell nothing but formal wear and accessories. We also offer alteration services.”
The Curiosity Shop sells formal wear for all ages, all sizes and all occasions, from wedding gowns to prom gowns to pageants gowns, as well as wide range of accessories, from veils and custom made garters to shoes and jewelry, even invitations.
“We’re a one-stop-shop for everything you need for your special occasions and if it is not in the shop we will do our best to get is for you,” Triggs said.
“We take pride in our ability to get what a customer need and to make any alterations necessary to make their day special.”
The Curiosity Shop formal wear line includes over 800 gowns from vendors such as Da Vinci, Impression Bridal, Blush Prom by Alexia and Party Time Formals. The shop also offers tuxes for proms, weddings, and other formal events, and is listed in the U.S. Wedding Directory and the Birmingham Wedding Guide.
Triggs, who learned to sew while in high school, said she and her staff can also do just about any type of alterations needing to be done, from hemming to repairing or resizing a garment to replacing or repairing a zipper.
“I learned to sew when I was in high school at Oakman. The home economics teacher, Mrs. Thompson, taught me the basics of sewing and I fell in love with it and things went from there,” Triggs said. “We can do just about anything type of sewing alterations needing done, from hemming dresses and pants to resizing a gown so it fits like it should, and I think we’re the only shop left in town that will replace or repair a zipper.”
Triggs has a staff of three other women who assist her during the prom and pageant season, which is the busiest time of the year for the Curiosity Shop.
In fact it is so busy that starting in January the shop will be open seven days a week through the month of May.
“All the girls are former customers, and they are absolutely wonderful. A lot of times it will be standing room only in the shop with folks waiting in line for dressing rooms, but we get the job done, because that’s what we do....serve beautiful people with beautiful clothing,” Triggs said. “And we are and always will be forever grateful for all the support we have received over the years not only from our customers, but from everyone in the community.”
The Curiosity Shop is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and starting in January, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays.
The shop is located at 1007 22nd Street in Jasper. The phone number is (205) 387-1010.
