“Those blogs turned into an opportunity to write for the Daily Mountain Eagle in 2007,” Watson said.
Watson’s weekly column in the Eagle provided the fodder for his first book, Remembering Big, which was published in 2009. That collection of columns was well received, but also proved a learning experience for the writer as he promotes his second book, Life Happens, Enjoy the Ride.
“This book is much better edited than the first one,” Watson laughed. “If I had realized I wanted to be a writer, I would have paid more attention in high school English class.”
Life Happens consists of Watson’s most popular columns from the year, columns he said he received the most feedback, comments and questions about.
Another learning experience with this book has been the promotion and sales. One avenue of promotion has been edited images showing a variety of famous people and images with the book’s cover Photoshopped into the image. Faux celebrity endorsements have come via Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and even Albert Einstein.
“Being a local author, you don’t have the resources to promote the book like big publishing houses do,” Watson said. “I’ve been having fun with it, using my creativity to get the word out.”
The book is available at Deb & Co. in the Jasper Mall, Green Top’s original location, Robinson’s Cleaners and Little Giant produce in Sumiton, Jean’s on the River, as well as the gift shop at Princeton Hospital.
The book can also be purchased at Amazon.com or at Watson’s websites at www.homefolkmedia.com or www. slosshollerscholar.com.
“If they buy it on the website, I’ll autograph it before I send it out,” Watson said.
Watson’s first book is also still available, although recently he has begun donating some of the copies to local area cancer centers at Walker Baptist Medical Center and Princeton Hospital for the patients to read as they undergo lengthy treatments.
“I have gotten a ton of emails and calls from people who picked the book up there,” Watson said. “They seem to really enjoy them.”
Watson will also be doing a series of signings, including one on Black Friday at Deb & Co. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second will be at the Jasper Public Library for their local author signing event, on Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m.
He has also booked a signing at the North Shelby County Library on Dec. 19.
