Lifelong Walker County resident Sue O’Rear was recently honored by the Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole as the “2012 Administrative Support Assistant of the Year.”

O’Rear has served the Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole at its Jasper office for the past 14 years, and the agency’s division director, David Steele, praised her hard work when she was presented with the award.

Steele said O’Rear transferred to the department in 1998 from the Department of Public Health, and she was promoted to an ASA II in 2001 and to an ASA III in 2005.

“She learned her duties quickly and has been an outstanding employee,” Steele said. “She has demonstrated her abilities extremely well during an extended staffing shortage. She made sure assignments and duties were carried out and sacrificed by canceling vacation time with her family to make sure the office was covered. She is truly an unsung hero by going the extra mile and putting the agency first.”

O’Rear is very active in her church and provides background support for a local chapter of Celebrate Recovery (a faith based program which provides free drug and alcohol abuse treatment classes to the public).

O’Rear’s immediate supervisor nominated her for the award. He described her as very humble and shy with regard to her own accomplishments and acts of charity and service. He kept the award a secret from her until it was to be presented and then tricked her into going to the ceremony in order to have her there to accept the award.
