In an effort to publicize their fall festival, the students and teachers of Memorial Park Elementary School crafted an army of scarecrows, which are now lining the sidewalk.

There’s a scarecrow version of Teddy Roosevelt, a scarecrow version of the Lorax and even a scarecrow version of Principal Ann Jackson — complete with her infamous paddle, Mr. Blister.

This will be the third year Memorial Park has displayed the decorations. Jackson said it is not only popular among teachers, students and parents, but throughout the neighborhood surrounding the school, too.

Each classroom at the school chooses a design for their scarecrow, which will be displayed for the entire week leading up to the school’s fall festival.

“The kids have a ball with it,” said PTO President Angie Lewis.

A winning scarecrow will be chosen by several Jasper officials at Memorial Park’s Fall Fest, which serves as a major fundraiser for the school.

The MPS Fall Fest will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Admission is $8 for children and free for adults. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the event.

The festival will include a cupcake walk, a haunted house, face painting, a hay ride, a moon walk, bingo, disco dancing and several carnival games.

Lewis said the fundraiser will also include MPS Maximum Security Jail, in which teachers, students, parents and the principal can be placed in jail for a dollar. Jackson said the prisoner must either pay bail or do their time.
