It seemed like Alicia Davis’ timing couldn’t have been worse when she opened Jasper’s first day spa in 2008.

Families and business owners were starting to feel the effects of the recession and making cutbacks in order to weather the financial crisis.

Three years later, Rastore Spa has not only survived; it is thriving.

“I knew it would do well because it’s my passion, but I wouldn’t have expected to grow so quickly,” Davis said.

Customers come from all over Walker and several surrounding counties for facials, massages and other forms of “me time.”

They range in age from pre-teens who have a birthday party there with friends to moms who need a day out and seniors who want to get their hair done.

Many men also enjoy the spa.

“Of course, massages are excellent for men who have tight muscles from working hard every day. Now we offer hair cuts for them, too,” Davis said.

It has been more than a year and a half since Davis counted the files on clients. At that time, the number stood at 1,500.

Some customers stop by on a regular basis while others only come when their spouse buys them a gift certificate for a special occasion.

The reasons people make an appointment at Rastore Spa are as different as the services offered.

One facial helps them relax while another is designed specifically to control acne or aging problems.

They may get a massage for fun or to help them get rid of headaches or back pain.

Davis said almost all who visit Rastore Spa for one service return to try out another.

The spa has done so well that Davis recently relocated the business to English Plaza, her third move in as many years.

“We just kept outgrowing our space,” she said.

The spa began in a small unit on Pediatric Drive and then moved to Airport Road, where it expanded from two rooms to five.

The new location in English Plaza is large enough for Davis to offer some new services, such as nail care, hair styling and professional makeup application.

The salon is connected to yet kept separate from the rest of the spa to protect the privacy of all customers.

“We want to be a place where you can get everything that you need in one day,” Davis said.

Although services may be scheduled individually, several packages are available for customers who have plenty of time for pampering.

Customers new to the spa may be interested in the sampler package, which includes a 30-minute facial and 30-minute massage followed by a spa pedicure.

“The Great Escape” features a 90-minute custom facial, 90-minute Swedish massage, spa manicure and a cleanse-cut-and-style.

Rastore Spa has five staff members. Dr. Warren Seiler also makes regular visits from Birmingham to offer specialized services, such as Botox and Juvederm.

Davis, who used to work for doctors like Seiler, said she saw a need for a local spa when she realized how many people were driving from Jasper to Birmingham to visit places like the Spa at Ross Bridge.

“The people who work there are my friends. I went to school with them. We’re all taught the same and are just as qualified,” Davis said.
