WWE star Rhyno to wrestle in Jasper

Posted

Rhyno, one of the most popular professional wrestlers in the world, will make his Alabama independent wrestling debut in Jasper Saturday night in a show at Swann Gym promoted by Jasper-based New Era Wrestling.

The wrestler also known as “The Man Beast” and “The War Machine” finished his most recent run with World Wrestling Entertainment on July 17, and he can currently be seen each week on Impact Wrestling. Rhyno is a former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, NWA World Heavyweight Champion, WWE Hardcore Champion, WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champion, WCW United States Champion and ECW TV Champion.

“My time in WWE was great. During my most recent time with them, I had a blast teaming with Heath Slater, but I just wanted to do more, and that is why I decided not to resign with them,” Rhyno said. “I want to be able to do my part to give back to this sport and help the young guys coming up, and that is something that is easy for me to be able to do on the independent scene.”

Even on his trip to Jasper, Rhyno is leading a seminar for wrestlers, offering them a chance to learn from his years of experience in traveling the world as a professional wrestler.

“That is why I keep doing this. I want to be here for the guys,” he said.

Rhyno added that he also continues to wrestle for the fans around the world.

“Going back to the indy shows gives me a chance to really interact and spend time with each and every fan,” he said. “I always have shirts and pictures that fans can purchase at the shows, but I also enjoy just taking a minute to have pictures taken or to shake a hand. The fans are the reason for my success over the years. I love to have the opportunity to thank them for always being there for me.”

Rhyno will be headlining “Primal Rage,” presented by New Era Wrestling. The event will be Saturday evening at Swann Gym. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with bell time set for 7:30 p.m. The wrestling legend will battle for the NEW Open Championship against “The Mercenary Pitbull” Romeo Quevedo.

“We originally had another wrestler scheduled to wrestle Romeo for the title, but that person had to back out due to a contractual issue with another wrestling company,” NEW owner James Phillips said. “I talked to multiple big names around the country to fill that spot with my No. 1 choice being Rhyno, because he was such a new free agent and hardly ever wrestles in the southern part of the country. The stars aligned, and it all worked out. We now have a better match than we originally had signed for this show. Rhyno and Romeo will tear the roof off Swann Gym. I’ve even had to ask our ring crew to re-enforce the ring for this match.”

Rhyno said he has been watching tape of Quevedo, and he is impressed by his ability.

“He is a great wrestler. He has every factor that makes you a star in the this business,” Rhyno said. “But what he doesn’t have is the support of the people in that crowd. I’m coming here to pick up this win for the hard-working people of Jasper. I’m here to beat Romeo for all the little kids in the audience. By the end of the night, Romeo will feel the Gore!”

Other matches on the card include “Action” Mike Jackson, Bubba Cagle and Dawson Kimbrell will face Ace Haven, Robby Vio and Caleb Ooten and Cody Windham will battle Greg Dotson. Other wrestlers signed for the card include Takuri, “Unicorn Princess” Taylor Rae, Lights Cameron Action, Johnny Rage, Chico Adams, Brandon Whatley, “The Elite Athlete” Johnny Zeke and “AquaBruh” Cyrus Satin.
