WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates shocked the Cordova Blue Devils with a 41-12 win Friday night at Estes Hudson Stadium in the first Class 4A Region 6 game of the season for both teams.

The Pirates’ strong running attack along with three costly turnovers by the Blue Devils led to the lopsided victory. Winfield outgained Cordova 378-198 and had more yards rushing (310) than the Blue Devils had in total yards. Each of Cordova’s three turnovers led to Pirate touchdowns.

Winfield opened the game with an onside kick which the Pirates recovered, but a sack by Zachary Bozeman shut the drive down. On Cordova’s first drive of the game came the first of their three turnovers, an interception the Pirates returned to the Blue Devil five-yard line.

One play later, Winfield was on the board with a run by quarterback Luke McKinney. The two-point conversion was no good, and the lead was 6-0. Winfield ate up over six minutes on their next possession which ended with a one-yard Drew Blackburn touchdown run, the first of his three in the game.

Kason Smith threw his second interception of the night on the Blue Devil’s next drive, setting up Winfield at Cordova’s 24-yard line. Two plays later, the Pirates scored again, taking a 21-0 lead with 9:30 remaining in the first half. Winfield would reach the end zone on their next two possessions as well, taking a 35-0 lead into halftime.

Cordova’s defense stiffened up in the third quarter, but a fumble to begin the fourth put Winfield again in plus territory. Four plays later, the Pirates earned a 41-0 lead on a 14-yard touchdown run by Blackburn.

The Blue Devils finally got on the board with 2:48 remaining in the game on a one-yard run by Javion Hill. Following the incomplete two-point conversion, Winfield fumbled their kickoff return giving the ball to Cordova at the Pirates’ 25. Hill scored on the very next play, cutting the lead to 41-12 with 2:35 left on the clock.

Hill ran for 115 yards on 19 carries with two scores to lead the way for the Blue Devils offensively. Justin Wallace added 78 yards on 13 carries.

Next Week Cordova (0-3, 0-1) hosts the Haleyville Lions (1-2, 0-1) in another Region 6 matchup.
