Wilma Brakefield, 98, of Jasper, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019, at Pine Place Assisted Living in Arley, Ala.
Family will be receiving friends Saturday, June 22, 2019, from 1 until 2 p.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Kilgore-Green Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Wilma Jane Gladden was born in Parrish and lived in Walker County all of her life. She graduated from Cordova High School in 1939 and worked in the Post Office there following high school. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort by working at the DuPont plant in Childersburg.
Following the war, she met her future husband, Ivan Brakefield, in Jasper and they married in 1948. They had two children, Fred Brakefield and Judy Brakefield Kelly and she was a wonderful and loving mother to them throughout her life. In addition to caring for her children, she volunteered at a special needs school in Jasper for several years. In 1966, she opened Wilma's Flowers and enjoyed a very successful career as a florist and business owner for over 40 years receiving many professional accolades. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jasper for more than 50 years and was a founding member of the Jasper Pilot Club. One of the greatest joys of her life was spending time with her grandchildren, Chris, Patrick and Lauren and more recently with her great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Brakefield; parents, Fred and Nettie Robison Gladden; brother, Joe Gladden; and in-laws, Henry and Mae Weaver Brakefield.
She is survived by her children, Fred Brakefield of Jasper and Judy Brakefield Kelly (Don) of Blue Ridge, Ga.; and grandchildren, Patrick Kelly, Lauren Kelly Watkins and Chris Brakefield
