Wallace shines in Cordova loss to Northside

NORTHPORT — The Northside Rams defeated the Cordova Blue Devils 48-28 in a game of wildly contrasting styles Friday night.

For the second straight week, a Cordova player had an incredible offensive performance in a losing effort. With last week’s star, senior quarterback Kason Smith out with an illness, running back Justin Wallace carried the load.

Wallace amassed 251 yards on 28 carries and four touchdowns before sustaining an injury at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

As Cordova pounded the ball on the ground, Northside flung it through the air. The Rams dynamic passing attack gained 262 yards and five touchdowns, all in the first half. Northside made a statement on the opening drive, scoring on the 4th play from scrimmage on a 43-yard bomb. A mishandled PAT left the score 6-0 Northside.

With freshman quarterback Cody Headrick making his first career start, Cordova went 3 and out in their opening drive.

After another long Northside touchdown pass and a successful 2-point conversion made the score 14-0, Cordova abandoned the spread formation in favor of a power run game. The offensive line and Wallace responded immediately.

After a great kickoff return by Elijah Thomas took the Blue Devils past the 50, Wallace ran the ball eight times and finally took the ball into the end zone. The extra point by Eli Escobar was good to make the score 14-7.

Cordova’s defense held on the next possession, stopping the Rams thanks to a sack by Karlos Patmon. However, the Blue Devils own possession ended in a blocked punt setting up an easy 2-yard touchdown for Northside to extend their lead to 21-7.

Northside immediately went for the death nail, recovering an onside kick and scoring quickly through the air to push the lead to 28-7. Northside added 2 more scores in the first half through the air, but Wallace managed to bring the crowd to their feet when he demolished a defensive back in the open field in route to a big 35-yard run.

Wallace later scored to make the halftime score 41-14.

To start the second half, Wallace only needed 4 rushes to find pay dirt and make the score 41-21.

The Cordova defense stood tall too, forcing Northside into 3 straight 3-and-outs to start the second half. Later in the third quarter, Wallace electrified the crowd again on a run in which he managed to keep his balance while rolling over a defender’s back for a 38-yard touchdown.

With the score 41-28 to start the 4th quarter, Cordova had all the momentum, stopping Northside yet again on a huge sack by Justin Calloway and Dawson Pate.

However, the Blue Devils, were unable to capitalize offensively the rest of the way with Wallace sitting out most of the 4th quarter.

Northside added a late score to make the final score 48-28.

The Blue Devils will be back in action next week on the road at Oakman.
