Carbon Hill off to 2-0 start at county

OAKMAN — Carbon Hill’s run to a fourth straight Walker County Volleyball Tournament title is right on track after Day 1 of the tournament, which concludes on Saturday.

The Bulldogs went 2-0 at Oakman High School on Thursday, beating Curry (25-13, 25-13) and Cordova (25-12, 25-12).

Next up for Carbon Hill, the No. 1 team in Class 3A, are pool play matches on Saturday at Oakman. The Bulldogs face the host team at 11 a.m. and they close out pool play with a match against Dora at 1 p.m. The single-elimination portion of the tournament starts at 2 p.m.

Oakman also went 2-0 on the day, beating Cordova (25-18, 25-16) and topping Dora (20-25, 25-18, 15-4).

In Thursday’s other match, Curry defeated Dora (25-23, 22-25, 15-13).

Carbon Hill (20-3) went 6-0 in last year’s tournament, beating Curry in the championship match.

On Thursday, Alyssa Dutton — last year’s Walker County Tournament MVP — had 15 kills, six digs, two aces, one block and one assist, Lacey Evans had 14 kills, 19 assists, nine digs and five aces, Grayson Evans added 11 kills, five digs, four aces and a block, Abby Martin had three kills, two blocks, four digs and an ace, Sidney Keeton had 18 assists and four digs and Hannah Dutton had four digs.

For Oakman, Iyana Canada had 22 kills, six digs, two aces and two blocks, Alaisha Hubbard had 10 kills and 10 digs, Chante Williams added eight kills and eight aces and Terra Sherer had 45 assists and three aces.

Matches start against at 9 a.m. Saturday with Oakman playing Curry, followed by Cordova vs. Dora at 10 a.m., Oakman vs. Carbon Hill at 11 a.m., Cordova vs. Curry at noon and Carbon Hill vs. Dora at 1 p.m.
