Braswell, Boteler lead Cordova girls past Oakman

CURRY — Dora went on a 3-point barrage in the final minutes of the first half to pull away from Cordova en route to a 62-43 victory over the Blue Devils in their Walker County Tournament matchup Thursday at Curry High School.
With the win, Dora (5-16), the tournament’s No. 4 seed, moves on to play top seeded Oakman (15-5) at 8 p.m. today.
The Bulldogs, who split their two regular-season games with Cordova, held a slim 18-16 lead with three minutes left in the opening half. That’s when Dora caught fire, closing the quarter with an 11-0 run.
JaMarcus Goodman stared the spurt with a 3-pointer at the 2:15 mark. Kaleb Towns made 3-pointers with 1:06 left and 30 seconds later and Dee Wilkerson added a pair of free throws as the Bulldogs took a 29-16 lead into the half.
Dora led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter after baskets by Goodmon and Elijah Pruitt made the score 38-23. Cordova put together a 9-2 run to close the quarter with Dora leading 40-32.
The fourth quarter was all Dora.
The Bulldogs started the period with a 9-0 run of their own on baskets from Wilkerson, Kavin Towns, Kaleb Towns and Knoxx Eustice.
For Dora, both Wilkerson and Kaleb Towns had 15 points, Kavin Towns added nine, Eustice had eight, Goodmon and Pruitt each put in seven and Matthew Harrison had two.
Jason Johnson had 13 points and four blocks for Cordova (4-14), Miguel Lopez added nine points, Greyson Sims had eight points, Kason Smith had five and both Christopher Isbell and Hayden Bates added four points.
Today’s Oakman-Dora game is a rematch of last year’s championship game, a 62-53 Dora win at Cordova High School.

In a game that featured 81 free throws, 58 fouls and nine players fouling out, Cordova held off Oakman 51-45 in their game in the Walker County Tournament on Thursday night at Curry High School.
Cordova’s duo of BG Braswell and McKinsey Boteler combined for 44 points in the game with Braswell leading all scorers with 26. Cordova, the tournament’s No. 4 seed advances to play No. 1 seed Curry at 6:30 p.m. today.
Oakman kept the game close throughout, drawing within three points at 48-45 with 52.9 seconds remaining following a putback by Alaisha Hubbard. Cordova iced the game with free throws from both Braswell and Boteler.
Cordova led 13-9 after the opening quarter. Oakman cut the gap to four points at 25-21 at the half. The Blue Devils took a 32-31 lead into the final quarter. Oakman had its chances, but was just 6 of 19 from the free-throw line over the final eight minutes.
Only three players scored points for the Blue Devils. Lilly Werling added seven points.
Both Shalayiah Waid and Savannah Brown led the Wildcats with 13 points, Hubbard put in 10, Carly Woods had four, Katelyn Ramsey had three and Brooklyn Caffee added two.
For the game, Oakman, which had four players foul out, was 17 of 44 from the free-throw line. Cordova, which had five players foul out, was 19 of 37 from the line.
In Thursday’s JV boys game, top seeded Oakman defeated Cordova 51-31.
