Walker County All-Stars win World Series title

The Walker County Miners All-Star team won the Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven, Miss., on Friday, rallying for a 5-4 victory in the championship game.

Tournament MVP Conner Elmore drove in Blanton Gillespie with the game-winning run in extra innings.

Walker County played its last three games against Jefferson Parrish Recreation Department, Louisiana (JPRD). The Miners won the first game against JRPD, 4-3. JPRD handed Walker County its only loss of the season in the second game, winning 5-1, and forcing a winner-take-all final.

Down to their last out, Walker County trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Austin Scobey and Tristan Pedraza kept hope alive, drawing walks and putting the tying runners on base.

Alex Wilson followed with a two-run single, sending the game into extra innings tied at 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gillespie and Jesse Walker reached on singles and Cooper Martin drew a walk to load the bases. With one out, Elmore drove in Blanton with a sacrifice fly to right field for the series-deciding run.

Ryan Mitchell, Martin, Walker and Scobey each made the All-Tournament Team with MVP Elmore.

Jasper went 5-1 in the World Series, defeating the Bolivar All-Stars (14-1), Canton Stingers (11-4), Grenada All-Stars (12-6), JPRD (4-3), losing to JPRD (5-1) and bouncing back with a second win over JPRD (5-4).

The team went 16-1, winning the Walker County title, the district, the area and the state tournament. Walker County defeated Leeds 12-3 in the state championship game in Madison.
