Walker’s boys tennis team breezed through the Class 6A, Section 4 Tournament at Valley Park on Tuesday, punching its ticket for next week’s State Tennis Tournament in Decatur in the process.

The Vikings swept all singles and doubles titles on the day. Homewood placed second, also earning a spot at state, set for Monday and Tuesday.

For Walker, the defending Class 6A state champion, No. 1 Tyler Banks, No. 2 Ben Hicks, No. 3 Mason Woodman, No. 4 John Bertoldi, No. 5 Jack Bowen and No. 6 Grayson Barber each won section championships in singles.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Banks and Hicks, the No. 2 team of Woodman and Bertoldi and the No. 3 team of Bowen and Jack Bryan also walked away with section titles.

The Vikings have missed the state tournament just once since 1999, placing third in the section tournament in 2004.

Walker’s boys won their first state championship since 2010 last year, finishing 19 points ahead of second-place Florence.

Banks (No. 3), Hicks (No. 4) and Bertoldi (No. 6) won individual state titles last year.
