CORDOVA — A late comeback attempt by the Cordova Blue Devils was stymied by the John Carroll Cavaliers in a 13-12 loss on Friday night at Hudson-Kerby Field.

Turnovers would plague the Blue Devils, with Cordova suffering four fumbles.

Cordova was led by Jack Gable, who rushed for 110 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown. Cade Naramore added 80 yards on three receptions with a score.

Defensively, Blaize Nix, Jake Kiser and Jacob Kilgore recorded four tackles each, with Nix and Kiser adding a tackle for a loss each.

The Blue Devils scored the only touchdown of the opening half on the first possession of the game, driving four plays on 31 yards. Gable found the endzone on a two-yard run, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, putting Cordova ahead 6-0. The Cavaliers scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter on drives of 26 and 40 yards to take the 13-6 lead.

With four minutes left in regulation, Cordova mounted a 10-play, 69-yard drive, ending with a 26-yard touchdown strike from Cody Headrick to Naramore. The ensuing two-point conversion, hampered by a false start penalty, proved unsuccessful — allowing John Carroll to run out the clock and clinch the 13-12 win.

Cordova (1-3, 0-2) plays the hosting-Ramsay Rams on Friday in a Class 5A, Region 5 bout.
