Three golfers matched the scorching weather at Musgrove Country Club on Friday in the opening round of the 50th annual Travis Hudson/Bernard Weinstein Invitational.
Oneonta’s Cody O’Toole, Falkville’s Eli Marty and Ben Follett of Starkville, Miss., each fired a three-under par 68 for a one-stroke lead over a trio of golfers.
Eleven golfers in the championship division finished under par in the opening round, which was delayed 45 minutes due to rain in the late session.
Defending champion Garrett Johnson, who led wire-to-wire last year, is four strokes back after an opening-round 72. The Mississippi State golfer shot a 64 in the opening round last year.
Cordova’s Brent Borden was the top local golfer in the championship division on Friday, shooting a one-under 70. He’s tied with four other golfers in seventh place.
Six-time tournament champion Steve Hudson opened with a 72.
Fayette’s Andrew Hillis, Hoover’s Clay Guerin and Birmingham’s Claude Cooper are tied for fourth place, one stroke behind while Birmingham’s Bobby Spiller — the 2008 champion — Orlando’s Alan Pope, Oneonta’s Caleb O’Toole and Birmingham’s Joey Fortner are two strokes back.
Playing from the white tees, Jasper’s Tom Ferrell had the round of the day, shooting a four-under par 67 for a two-stroke lead.
