Sumiton Elementary employee passes away

Posted

Deb Akins Odom, a longtime employee with Walker County Schools, died Wednesday following a medical emergency at Sumiton Elementary School.

Walker County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joel Hagood confirmed that Odom, a computer lab tech at Sumiton Elementary, started having medical complications at the school on Wednesday. The school's Cardiac Emergency Response Team immediately provided care until emergency personnel arrived at the school.

Hagood said Odom was transported to Walker Baptist and could not be revived.

A cause of death has not been determined.

"Deb was a great lady, loved by all. I just ask that everybody please keep her family in their prayers in moving forward," Hagood said.

The Walker County Board of Education released Sumiton Elementary, Sumiton Middle and Dora High schools early at 1 p.m. Wednesday, due to the shock and grief of employees.

Hagood said additional counselors will be at Sumiton Elementary on Thursday to provide support to school personnel and students.

Funeral arrangments for Odom had not been made at press time.
