SUMITON — The Sumiton Christian Eagles defeated the Meek Tigers 28-6 on Friday night at Campbell Field with explosive plays led by Jeremy Brown who had three receptions for 175 yards and two scores.

Meek (0-6) led the way in almost all statistics in the game. The Tigers ran 74 plays compared to 27 for the Eagles (1-5). They outgained the Eagles 343-236 in yardage and produced 20 first downs to the Eagles’ five. Meek’s Matthew Clark led all rushers with 35 carries for 208 yards and a score. However, the Tigers also led the way with penalties, committing 17 to 8 for the Eagles. Meek piled up 129 yards in penalties.

Although Meek opened the game with a long drive for a touchdown and held Sumiton Christian to 14 plays in the first half, they went into halftime down 14-6.

The Eagles made the most of their few plays with an 83-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Robertson to Brown and a double pass that resulted in Cade Narramore tossing a 49-yard scoring pass to Corbin Hicks.

Sumiton Christian took only two plays to begin the third quarter to go up 20-6 on a 56-yard pass from Robertson to Brown. The Eagles sealed the win with an interception return for a score by Hicks with 7:22 remaining in the game. Hicks led the way on the Eagles’ bend but don’t break defense with two interceptions.

“Our defense stood up tonight after that first drive. They went down and scored on us and the rest of the way we really played some solid defense,” said Sumiton Christian head coach David Powell. “It was a great team win.”

Robertson went five of 14 for 187 yards and two scores for the Eagles. Hicks had two catches for 61 yards and a score.

Stuart Waldrep completed 14 passes on 32 attempts for 136 yards with two interceptions for Meek. Bryson Hudson led the Tigers with six catches for 77 yards.

Next week both teams enter back into region play. Sumiton Christian will host Tarrant and Meek will travel to Brilliant.
