In a game that didn’t make it to the second half due to lightning and storms in the area, Decatur Heritage knocked off Sumiton Christian 31-7 at Campbell Field on Friday night.
Both coaches agreed to call the game after two quarters.
The home-standing Eagles kept the game close through the first quarter.
Decatur Heritage scored its first touchdown at the 4:36 mark of the first quarter on a Colton Keith 7-yard run for a 7-0 lead. Decatur Heritage (2-0) took control in the second quarter. The visiting Eagles hit a 43-yard touchdown pass with 10:02 left in the first half, made a short field goal and got touchdown runs of 38 and 8 runs to open up a 31-0 lead.
Christopher Bunn scored the lone touchdown for Sumiton Christian, going 80 yards on a kickoff return for a score with 2:31 left in the second quarter, making the score 31-7. Next up for the Eagles is a home game against Sulligent in the Class 2A, Region 5 opener.
